The purpose of the study is to reveal the complex picture of inequality in Europe. As part of the UPLIFT project, this framework study has been separated into two parts. The first part identifies the main drivers of different inequalities in Europe. It also discusses how the driver specifically impacts the young generation, i.e., those aged 15-29, and try to find evidence of the impact of the drivers, particularly in the wake of the 2008-09 financial crisis.

The aim of the study is to describe the state and evolution of social inequalities in Europe showing trends during the economic crisis and the subsequent recovery years. A specific focus of the analysis is placed on the primary target group of UPLIFT project, the urban young population (those between 15 and 29 years of age). The analysis is performed at both the country and the regional level describing differences between regions and inequality within regions.

A new study on „Attitudes towards adequacy and sustainability of social protection systems in the EU”, commissioned by the Directorate General for Employment, Social Affairs & Inclusion of the European Commission has just been published and made available on the portal of the EC.

Tárki’s research on the contact problems in surveys has been completed with a “re-contact” design pilot study based on the 8th wave of the European Social Survey (ESS). Non-responses pose a problem for researchers in social sciences regardless of sector and research purpose both in Hungary and internationally. A medium-term (1980-2020) account of the mechanisms of social closure in Hungary - and elsewhere

The focus of the research is on the barriers to social mobility in the post-transition Hungary and (for comparisons) in several other countries. The central theme is the place and mechanisms of internal ruptures blocking greater merit-based fluidity in the society. Detailed micro-analysis of major social science datasets spanning through four decades will serve as a base of the investigation.

In the framework of the EUROSHIP project, TÁRKI hosted a meeting with the participation of the National Stakeholder Committee, consisting of nongovernmental organizations whose activities focus on providing help to vulnerable social groups. The meeting took place at the TÁRKI office on September 2, 2020, with participants including Kinga Joó from the National Association of Large Families in Hungary (Nagycsaládosok Országos Egyesülete), Ákos Pordán from the Hand in Hand Foundation (Kézenfogva Alapítvány), Ádám Rozgonyi-Horváth from the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta (Máltai Szeretetszolgálat), as well as Anikó Bernát, András Gábos, Kata Jávor, Márton Medgyesi, Zsófia Tomka and István György Tóth from TÁRKI.

An important objective of the InGRID-2 project is to expand IPOLIS (Integrated Poverty and Living Conditions Indicator System) - currently pertaining to children, young people and elderly people - with data of other socially vulnerable groups. These groups are people with disabilities, as well as migrants and people with a migrant background. Further, additional vulnerable groups like the Roma and institutionalised people will be included at a later stage, following the appropriate development of the related data infrastructure.  

In Vol. 19 of the series „Comparative Sociology” of Brill, the international academic publisher founded in 1683, Iván Szelényi and Péter Mihályi explore the relationship between liberalism, illiberalism and despotic forms of dictatorship in their article titled „The Two Forms of Modern Capitalism: Liberal and Illiberal States". The bottom line of the paper is that illiberal regimes as long as they offer a minimal legal guarantee to capitalist businesses, can accommodate a capitalist system. Under despotic-dictatorial systems this is unimaginable.
