The theme of the 12th Conference “Social Monitoring and Reporting in Europe” at Villa Vigoni, Loveno di Mennagio, October 23-25, 2017 was Resilience: An Asset in Difficult Times?
The 2017 „Social Monitoring and Reporting in Europe“ – conference will have a focus on the concept of „resilience“ and its measurement in terms of indicators and/or survey instruments. In a most general sense, resilience – as the antonym to vulnerability – may be defined as the ability to cope with critical states and forces like shocks, conflicts and stress, challenging the stability of systems such as communities, cities and societies, or – at the micro level – eventually also individuals and households. As a quality of such systems resilience may e.g. help to absorb shocks and to recover, to adapt to change or even to facilitate transformations of a system to a new equilibrium state. From such a point of view, resilience may thus be considered a desirable quality, particularly in time periods characterised by rapid and far reaching change, serious risks and threats of different sorts as well as conflicts and instabilities.
